The original 1933 King Kong gets points for being so drenched with subtext you can swim in it. But whenever Kong isn’t on screen it’s dreadful.

Peter Jackson is perfectly capable of making the greatest version of King Kong possible, and, for all I plan on knowing, he did. But in the end, it’s still a movie about a big fucking monkey, and I just can’t find it in me to care.
