This animated feature joins the growing ranks of comic book adaptations that prove that comics are not only about superheroes that dress up in animal-themed costumes to battle crime. Hopefully it, along with other good comics-to-film triumphs <em>Ghost World<\/em> and <em>A History of Violence<\/em>, will broaden moviegoers&#8217; awareness of the many alternative genres already explored in comics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-1009\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Persepolis\" class=\"wp-image-6364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/persepolis-punk.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The spirit of punk invades Iran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a rare privilege perhaps only ever shared by Frank Miller in making <em>Sin City<\/em> with Robert Rodriguez, Satrapi served as co-director and writer of the film (with Vincent Paronnaud). She sings music to my ears in the DVD bonus features; to paraphrase, she states that it is a fool&#8217;s errand to make a literal, strict adaptation of any graphic novel to film. As comics writer <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/alan-moore\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"281\">Alan Moore<\/a> once brilliantly and succinctly put it, comics are wholly unlike movies because, simply, &#8220;movies move.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent trend in Hollywood is to perform fan service (as it&#8217;s known) and make the most literally faithful adaptations possible. <em>Sin City<\/em>, <em>300<\/em>, and the upcoming <em><a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/whats-wrong-with-watchmen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1664\">Watchmen<\/a><\/em> all procede from the flawed presumption that the source materials&#8217; fanbase (the nerdy, genre-convention-attending strawmen in studios&#8217; equations that they expect to be buying the tickets and DVDs) want nothing less than perfect transitions from page to screen. But such a thing is never possible, let alone desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-1010\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Persepolis\" class=\"wp-image-6365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/persepolis-protest.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Politically conscious at a young age<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, <em>Persepolis<\/em> the film does share the strikingly stark look of Satrapi&#8217;s characteristic pen and ink illustrations.
