If <em>Joker<\/em> is a shallow remix of <em>Taxi Driver<\/em> and <em>King of Comedy<\/em>, <em>Ad Astra<\/em> is a bland smoothie of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/solaris\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1464\">Solaris<\/a><\/em> and <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em>, with a cavalcade of stars you may remember from <em>Space Cowboys<\/em> and <em>Armageddon<\/em>. I half expected Harrison Ford to appear, standing in a corner, creepily ordering Brad Pitt to &#8220;terminate, with extreme prejudice&#8221; &#8212; so it&#8217;s more <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em> than <em><a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/foolproof-and-incapable-of-error-christopher-nolans-70mm-unrestoration-of-2001-a-space-odyssey\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4535\">2001: A Space Odyssey<\/a><\/em>, which at least had the decency to have jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Brad Pitt and Liv Tyler in Ad Astra\" class=\"wp-image-7568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ad-astra-liv-tyler.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Brad Pitt has a few issues to work out before he can open his heart to Liv Tyler.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But really, <em>Ad Astra<\/em> is merely the story of an emotionally repressed mope (<a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/brad-pitt\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"140\">Brad Pitt<\/a>), working through his daddy issues by haphazardly murdering a bunch of people just like his dad (<a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/tommy-lee-jones\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1221\">Tommy Lee Jones<\/a>) did &#8212; as if they were mere bureaucratic red tape stopping the only person in the universe that can save the universe from saving the universe &#8212; and then, having saved the universe, finally becoming ready to open his heart to <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/liv-tyler\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1095\">Liv Tyler<\/a>. Anybody out there have any empathy for someone who can&#8217;t open their heart to Liv Tyler? Pure fiction!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as for its pseudo-sciencey verisimilitude, somewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimstanleyrobinson.info\">Kim Stanley Robinson<\/a> is banging his head against his writing desk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe this isn&#8217;t fair, but I couldn&#8217;t help but associate Ad Astra with Joker.
