Conventional wisdom is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/wachowskis\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1979\">The Wachowski<\/a>&#8216;s <em>The Matrix Reloaded<\/em> does everything movie lovers claim they want from sequels, and complain that Hollywood so rarely gives them: it expands the cast of characters while still taking care to enrich the returning players, it delves deeper into the themes of the first film while widening the scope to include even more, it explores the fictional universe in ways that illuminate the character&#8217;s motivations, it ups the ante on cutting-edge special effects, and expertly raises the stakes for a grand climax in a promised subsequent film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/matrix-reloaded-neo-bullets-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Keanu Reeves in The Matrix Reloaded\" class=\"wp-image-8482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/matrix-reloaded-neo-bullets-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/matrix-reloaded-neo-bullets-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/matrix-reloaded-neo-bullets-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/matrix-reloaded-neo-bullets.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stop! It&#8217;s bullet time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Matrix Reloaded<\/em> is smarter, has more exceptional action set pieces, and employs a more consistent sense of morality than the original <em>The Matrix<\/em>. It always bothered me that Neo (<a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/keanu-reeves\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"596\">Keanu Reeves<\/a>) and Trinity (<a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/carrie-anne-moss\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1976\">Carrie-Anne Moss<\/a>) casually sacrifice innocent humans by the dozens in the first film. I am sure it was a deliberate creative choice that in <em>Reloaded<\/em>, the heroes battle only virtual &#8220;programs&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why the popular opinion that both Matrix sequels suck? Here&#8217;s my theory: the concluding film in the trilogy (<em>The Matrix Revolutions<\/em>) fails to live up to everything set up by <em>Reloaded<\/em>. The mediocre third film makes all three look bad in retrospect.
