I think Peter Weir&#8217;s <em>The Truman Show<\/em> is part of informal trilogy (with <em>The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind<\/em> and <em>Man On the Moon<\/em>) in which <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/jim-carrey\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1989\">Jim Carrey<\/a> found a way to channel his manic energy and rubber-face-pulling into dramatic roles, in films that were not only populist, but also critically acclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, there are a few scenes in which it&#8217;s clear Weir wasn&#8217;t able to rein in Carrey&#8217;s more outr\u00e9 compulsions. Many interesting supporting characters (<a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/noah-emmerich\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"315\">Noah Emmerich<\/a> as Truman&#8217;s lifelong ersatz pal, who nevertheless seems to have some genuine affection for him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/laura-linney\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1082\">Laura Linney<\/a> as a decidedly more professional actor just doing a job) simply disappear from the film. It may not be perfect, but it builds to a very moving emotional wallop at the end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A true gem.
