{"id":637,"date":"2008-01-30T19:13:53","date_gmt":"2008-01-31T00:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/30\/u23d\/"},"modified":"2022-10-27T11:01:32","modified_gmt":"2022-10-27T15:01:32","slug":"u23d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/u23d\/","title":{"rendered":"U2 in a state called vertigo: U23D"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>U23D<\/em> is actually a fairly traditional concert movie, a mostly straight-up filmed record of a representative show of a single tour. <a href=\"http:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/u2\/\">U2<\/a> had already produced one theatrical feature film about themselves (1988&#8217;s <em>Rattle and Hum<\/em>), and released numerous productions on video and DVD before and since. So what could have been just another video of the world&#8217;s most overexposed band needed to differentiate itself somehow. Turns out the latest 3D technology filling a 40-foot screen consuming your peripheral vision is more than enough to justify its existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D has come a long way from what I remember as a kid, watching <em>Creature of the Black Lagoon<\/em> on TV with red-and-blue cardboard glasses. At first, the degree of depth is disorienting and headache-inducing, but before too long the brain and eyes adjust. Your perspective is not that of the audience but as if you were standing right on stage with the lads. Sometimes I felt as if I should have been holding a tambourine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-2954\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"U23D\" class=\"wp-image-7959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-band.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>In a state called vertigo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The old songs I&#8217;ve memorized from thousands of plays on LP, tape, CD and now iPod are still great. The martial drumbeat to &#8220;Sunday Bloody Sunday&#8221; still sends chills down my spine, and I have to admit I even choked up a little during &#8220;Pride (In the Name of Love).&#8221; I was disappointed by the relative lack of songs from the band&#8217;s 90s &#8220;postmodern irony&#8221; trilogy <em>Achtung Baby<\/em> \/ <em>Zooropa<\/em> \/ <em>Pop<\/em>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/u2-zoo-tv-live-from-syndey\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"513\"><em>Zoo TV Live in Sydney<\/em><\/a> is a good document of that era. I now have a new appreciation for &#8220;Love and Peace or Else,&#8221; a new song from <em>How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb <\/em>that hadn&#8217;t quite made an impression on me yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-2955\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"U23D\" class=\"wp-image-7960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/u23d-bono.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>One blind Bono sez: Coexist or else<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m a longtime fan that has never seen U2 live. There was a frustration at every opportunity; if they weren&#8217;t sold out, I was too broke, sans car, or all of the above. So <em>U23D<\/em> made a kind of stopgap pilgrimage for me.
