That said, <em>Gone Baby Gone<\/em> is a big plate of grim, with side order of depressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/tag\/ben-affleck\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"1132\">Affleck<\/a> makes excellent use of location footage and local color. And not surprising for a movie directed by an actor (recently, Julie Delpy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/2-days-in-paris\/\"><em>2 Days in Paris<\/em><\/a> and George Clooney&#8217;s <em>Good Night and Good Luck<\/em>), Affleck privileges the characters and performances over the plot. We also see plenty of B-roll footage of the faces and voices of Bostoners on the streets, in the bars, and on local TV screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-2941\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ben Affleck directs Gone Baby Gone\" class=\"wp-image-7970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-affleck.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>How many times I gotta tell you, bro? I pahked the cahr down on the yahds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gone Baby Gone<\/em> is one of the first movies to poach some of the excellent acting talent premiered in HBO&#8217;s superb series <em>The Wire<\/em>. Doubtless by accident, Michael Kenneth Williams and Amy Ryan both play characters diametrically opposed to their TV counterparts; Williams is a sardonic po-lice resolved to the corruption around him (compare and contrast with <em>The Wire<\/em>&#8216;s Omar, a parasite that feeds on the drug trade), and Ryan plays a coked-out winner of bad-mother-of-the-year, the exact opposite in every way (including accent) of her salt-of-the-earth B&#8217;more Port Authority po-lice on <em>The Wire<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large size-full wp-image-2943\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Ed Harris and Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone\" class=\"wp-image-7971\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gone-baby-gone-ryan-harris.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Pay no attention to my rug.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The few bad points to mention (other than the aforementioned pervasive grim tone), are Ed Harris&#8217; inconsistent rug and a middle section papered over almost entirely by voiceover narration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good ol&#8217; Bahstuhn Cahtholick Ben Affleck is an all grown-up, big-boy director now, and lookit, he made himself a pretty decent movie.
