{"id":931,"date":"2008-07-25T00:13:12","date_gmt":"2008-07-25T05:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/?p=931"},"modified":"2022-10-16T12:53:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-16T16:53:18","slug":"the-adventures-of-baron-munchausen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/the-adventures-of-baron-munchausen\/","title":{"rendered":"Terry Gilliam throws the budget overboard in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Terry Gilliam&#8217;s mad, brilliant yarn <em>The Adventures of Baron Munchausen<\/em> is a strongly anti-war fable to which every kid (and adult!) ought to be exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the best of its kind (including <em>Ratatouille<\/em> and Gilliam&#8217;s own <em>Time Bandits<\/em>), <em>The Adventures of Baron Munchausen<\/em> works on multiple levels and is accessible to all ages. It is, however, a Gilliam film, as as such possessed of a certain degree of darkness and naughtiness. But depictions of tobacco, decapitation, and brief nudity (of the young Uma Thurman variety&#8230; thank you, Terry!) were evidently A-OK for kiddies in its era, and merited a mere PG rating. Special mention must also be paid to the spirited performance by a very young, adorable (but in a non-cloying way) Sarah Polley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"John Neville and Sarah Polley \u00een The Adventures of Baron Munchausen\" class=\"wp-image-4794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature-1200x674.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/chadossman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/adventures-of-baron-munchausen-feature.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What must be the most ironic caption in cinema history, &#8220;The Late 18th Century: The Age of Reason,&#8221; is followed immediately by harrowing imagery of warfare that wouldn&#8217;t be out of place in Kubrick&#8217;s <em>Paths of Glory<\/em>. Further driving the point home for the slower members of the audience, a trip to Hades finds Vulcan (Oliver Reed) forging ICBMs out of hellfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a theme straight out of Noam Chomsky, the military industrial complex (personified by Jonathan Pryce&#8217;s hilariously accented bureaucrat) imprisons the people within the walls of their own city with a sham state of perpetual war.
